Biografska drama o slavnom pijanistu, poljskom Židovu, tijekom 2. svjetskog rata u Varšavi. Wladyslaw Szpilman radijska je zvijezda čije je radno mjesto uništeno u napadu na Poljsku 1939. Tada za Židove počinje razdoblje progona, mučenja, ubijanja i svakog je dana sve gore. Szpilman je kao i većina Židova završio u getu, a pred deportacijom u logor Treblinku spasio ga je u zadnji čas obiteljski prijatelj. Odvojen od obitelji Szpilman isprva preživljava u getu, a zatim izvan njega. Sve se teže živi u Varšavi, a Szpilman svaki dan svjedoči užasu koji oko sebe šire pripadnici SS-a.
